Proof of Life. A self initiated project, I wanted to experiment with the idea of “jolie laide,” the “pretty ugly.” Finding mold simultaneously semi-repulsive and beautiful, I decided to use it as a medium on this piece. It became a study in control - or lack thereof. I could control the typeface, the size, the medium (in this case cream cheese) and provide its favored warm and humid environment, but I had no control over where it would grow, how long the process would take, or if it would grow at all. It was a lesson in patience and in embracing uncertainty. I shot the work as is and did not alter the mold in person or in photoshop.
